You've just booked a session with me, yay! So I guess I'll just see you at the photoshoot. Kidding. I felt actual heart palpitations writing that out. Planning is my favorite thing. Do you love planning? Sweet, let's plan all the things together. Hate planning? Sweet, I've got it all covered so you just live your life, sister.
Below I've tried my best to answer questions you might be asking and to walk through our experience together. The word experience sounds a little, well, experiential for just a family photo shoot, I get that. But I actually really hope this is an experience and not just a thing to endure to get beautiful photos at the end. You'll get those, too. But I want our time together to be fun! I want you guys to look back on your photoshoot as an event worth remembering. I want the words that come to mind when you recall your family session to be words like "relaxing" "enjoyable" "fun" and "way more amazing than I could ever imagine." My hope is this guide will help explain just how I intend to blow your mind with a great time together and ways to help you prepare for your shoot that won’t include yelling at kids in the minivan on the way there. I usually yell at my kids in our minivan so if it happens, no judgment.
If I don't answer a question on here, or you need better clarification on something or just need to chat, please call, text, email, or come over for coffee!
“What do we wear?”
I feel like in some ways this is the hardest question to answer sometimes. Because possibilities are endless and my honest answer is always "wear what makes you feel the best and most comfortable." I know family sessions are a big investment and what you wear does matter, even if it's not the most important thing (the most important thing is that you and your family feel their best during the shoot and when you look at these photos on your walls for generations!). So I'm going to list out some guidelines below. Do you remember the Pirates of the Caribbean movie when Captain Barbosa says the pirate code isn’t a list of rules but more like guidelines? Same goes for most of these. I'll let you know which ones should be taken a little more seriously.
- Ladies first. It's usually the best practice to plan the outfit for Mom. Then once that's finalized, it'll be easier to plan complimentary outfits for everyone else. So use this first guideline as your excuse to take a few hours to shop alone with a coffee and find something that makes you feel like the awesome woman you are.
- Matchy-matchy. These days you don't often see the blue jean white-shirted families of yore. But hey, 90s are making a comeback so if that's what you want, do it! Your family has permission to not match, though. In fact, different fabric textures and patterns add nice appeal to your photos. Often I see photographers say things like "don't match, just compliment each other." That advice works, but my first response when I read those words was "Well what does that even mean?" If you aren't sure either, I've included some examples of some family outfits below that "go but don't match" to give you an example. Still unsure? Call me and we can help each other out. Ultimately though, wear what makes you feel like the best you. As a personal example: I wear blue jeans nearly every day and I feel insecure about my legs. That means if a shorter dress or skirt will automatically make me feel so insecure and I won’t be able to relax the entire shoot and I’ll probably hate the photos. Are blue jeans the fanciest thing? No, but I can dress it up with a cute top (we millennials love blue jeans and cute tops forever, amen.) or layers and great shoes. Now I look photo-ready and still feel like Jen.
Where are we taking photos?
Location. Next to what you’re going to wear, this is often the biggest question asked. And with good reason! I LOVE talking about locations. I think great locations are so fun, but I also can take great photos of you in a target parking lot (honestly I really hope someone asks me to do this one day so I can blow their minds). Location selection is fun, but don’t let it stress you out. I’ve included a list of some of my favorite go-to locations in our area. If you’re wanting a lifestyle shoot down in the home well congratualtions your decision-making is all done. Don’t see anything you like on the list? Let’s make a time to chat so I can hear about what you’re dreaming up. Have access to a unique location you want to use? Even better! I’m hoping one day I’ll hear those magic words “my uncle owns a retro airplane hanger that we’d like to use.” Take my breath away (see what I did there?).
